    Rocketdyne's advanced coal slurry pumping program

    The Rocketdyne Division of Rockwell International Corporation is conducting a program for the engineering, fabrication, and testing of an experimental/prototype high-capacity, high-pressure centrifugal slurry feed pump for coal liquefaction purposes. The abrasion problems in a centrifugal slurry pump are primarily due to the manner in which the hard, solid particles contained in the slurry are transported through the hydraulic flow passages within the pump. The abrasive particles can create scraping, grinding, cutting, and sandblasting effects on the various exposed parts of the pump. These critical areas involving abrasion and impact erosion wear problems in a centrifugal pump are being addressed by Rocketdyne. The mechanisms of abrasion and erosion are being studied through hydrodynamic analysis, materials evaluation, and advanced design concepts

    Comparative analysis of corporate culture in a multinational organization

    This study built upon the Project GLOBE (House, Hanges, Javidan, Dorfman, & Gupta, 2004) analysis by using a Web-based version of the GLOBE Questionnaire in order to examine the extent to which the cultural values and practices of middle managers in a multinational organization vary depending on (a) their cultural background and the region in which they work, (b) whether they were a member of a recently acquired company, and (c) the number of years employed by the multinational organization. Multinational organizations face the unique challenge of operating in societies that have different sets of cultural norms, expectations, beliefs, and values. Just as societies have distinct cultures, so do organizations. Individuals working in organizations are influenced by the organizational culture as well as by the societal culture and competition between these 2 sets of distinct cultures can dramatically impact the success or failure of an acquisition, a strategic alliance, or any other initiative involving multiple cultures. Focusing on data from over 200 middle managers from the United States parent organization, and the regional organizations in Ireland, France, and Japan, a secondary analysis shows that an individual\u27s values and beliefs tend to be more closely aligned with the corporate culture of the parent organization than with the societal culture of the regional organization. Additionally, an examination of the culture of an acquired company shows that there are no statistically significant differences in cultural practices, and only 2 statistically significant differences in cultural values, several years after the acquisition. Finally, the results from this study show that statistically significant differences for cultural practices and values between individual respondents and the overall organization tend to be most prevalent among middle managers with 5 to 10 years of service with the organization

    Gz, a guanine nucleotide-binding protein with unique biochemical properties

    Cloning of a complementary DNA (cDNA) for Gz alpha, a newly appreciated member of the family of guanine nucleotide-binding regulatory proteins (G proteins), has allowed preparation of specific antisera to identify the protein in tissues and to assay it during purification from bovine brain. Additionally, expression of the cDNA in Escherichia coli has resulted in the production and purification of the recombinant protein. Purification of Gz from bovine brain is tedious, and only small quantities of protein have been obtained. The protein copurifies with the beta gamma subunit complex common to other G proteins; another 26- kDa GTP-binding protein is also present in these preparations. The purified protein could not serve as a substrate for NAD-dependent ADP- ribosylation catalyzed by either pertussis toxin or cholera toxin. Purification of recombinant Gz alpha (rGz alpha) from E. coli is simple, and quantities of homogeneous protein sufficient for biochemical analysis are obtained. Purified rGz alpha has several properties that distinguish it from other G protein alpha subunit polypeptides. These include a very slow rate of guanine nucleotide exchange (k = 0.02 min^-1), which is reduced greater than 20-fold in the presence of mM concentrations of Mg2+. In addition, the rate of the intrinsic GTPase activity of Gz alpha is extremely slow. The hydrolysis rate (kcat) for rGz alpha at 30 degrees C is 0.05 min^-1, or 200-fold slower than that determined for other G protein alpha subunits. rGz alpha can interact with bovine brain beta gamma but does not serve as a substrate for ADP-ribosylation catalyzed by either pertussis toxin or cholera toxin. These studies suggest that Gz may play a role in signal transduction pathways that are mechanistically distinct from those controlled by the other members of the G protein family

    Heterotrimeric guanine nucleotide-binding regulatory proteins (G proteins) consist of a nucleotide-binding alpha subunit and a high- affinity complex of beta and gamma subunits. There is molecular heterogeneity of beta and gamma, but the significance of this diversity is poorly understood. Different G protein beta and gamma subunits have been expressed both singly and in combinations in Sf9 cells. Although expression of individual subunits is achieved in all cases, beta gamma subunit activity (support of pertussis toxin-catalyzed ADP-ribosylation of rGi alpha 1) is detected only when beta and gamma are expressed concurrently. Of the six combinations of beta gamma tested (beta 1 or beta 2 with gamma 1, gamma 2, or gamma 3), only one, beta 2 gamma 1, failed to generate a functional complex. Each of the other five complexes has been purified by subunit exchange chromatography using Go alpha-agarose as the chromatographic matrix. We have detected differences in the abilities of the purified proteins to support ADP- ribosylation of Gi alpha 1; these differences are attributable to the gamma component of the complex. When assayed for their ability to inhibit calmodulin-stimulated type-I adenylylcyclase activity or to potentiate Gs alpha-stimulated type-II adenylylcyclase, recombinant beta 1 gamma 1 and transducin beta gamma are approximately 10 and 20 times less potent, respectively, than the other complexes examined. Prenylation and/or further carboxyl-terminal processing of gamma are not required for assembly of the beta gamma subunit complex but are indispensable for high affinity interactions of beta gamma with either G protein alpha subunits or adenylylcyclases

    Differential rotation and meridional flow in the solar supergranulation layer: Measuring the eddy viscosity

    We measure the eddy viscosity in the outermost layers of the solar convection zone by comparing the rotation law computed with the Reynolds stress resulting from f-plane simulations of the angular momentum transport in rotating convection with the observed differential rotation pattern. The simulations lead to a negative vertical and a positive horizontal angular momentum transport. The consequence is a subrotation of the outermost layers, as it is indeed indicated both by helioseismology and the observed rotation rates of sunspots. In order to reproduce the observed gradient of the rotation rate a value of about 1.5 x 10^{13} cm/s for the eddy viscosity is necessary. Comparison with the magnetic eddy diffusivity derived from the sunspot decay yields a surprisingly large magnetic Prandtl number of 150 for the supergranulation layer. The negative gradient of the rotation rate also drives a surface meridional flow towards the poles, in agreement with the results from Doppler measurements. The successful reproduction of the abnormally positive horizontal cross correlation (on the northern hemisphere) observed for bipolar groups then provides an independent test for the resulting eddy viscosity.Comment: 6 pages, 8 figures, Astronomy and Astrophysics (subm.

    Factorization Contributions and the Breaking of the ΔI=1/2\Delta I=1/2 Rule in Weak ΛNρ\Lambda N\rho and ΣNρ\Sigma N\rho Couplings

    We compute the modified factorization contributions to the ΛNρ\Lambda\rightarrow N\rho and ΣNρ\Sigma\rightarrow N\rho couplings and demonstrate that these contributions naturally include ΔI=3/2\Delta I=3/2 terms which are comparable (0.4\simeq 0.4 to 0.8-0.8 times) in magnitude to the corresponding ΔI=1/2\Delta I=1/2 terms. As a consequence, we conclude that models which treat vector meson exchange contributions to the weak conversion process ΛNNN\Lambda N\rightarrow NN assuming such weak couplings to satisfy the ΔI=1/2\Delta I=1/2 rule are unlikely to be reliable.Comment: 13 pages, uses REVTEX Entire manuscript available as a ps file at http://www.physics.adelaide.edu.au/theory/home.html .     Fungi Associated with Tree Cankers in Iowa: II. Diaporthe, Apioporthe, Pseudovalsa and Their Related Conidial Stages

    Twelve species of Diaporthe are reported for the state. Of these twelve, eight are associated with tree cankers, three are on shrubs and one is on an herbaceous host, Asclepias. Of the related genera, Apioporthe and Pseudovalsa are represented with one and two species respectively. Unconnected species of Phomopsis are recorded on Acer, Malus, Salix, Pinus, Juniperus, Cosmos, Plantago and Solanum
